Types Of Affiliate Ads

Can you remember the last banner ad you saw or what about the last tv commercial? If you can't then I'm not surprised. BUT, what are the most common links that affiliate programs encourage you to put on your site? Surprisingly, the answer is banner ads!

Standard banner ads work well for companies by promoting brand names, but are not very effective for affiliates. The average standard banner ad click-through rate is less than 0.5%. This means a 1000 visitors to your web site would result in an average of 5 people clicking on it. How many of those 5 people will actually take the action required for you to get paid by the affiliate program? IF YOU ARE LUCKY, BETWEEN 1% AND 2%. This is not going to make you very much money unless your web site gets tons of traffic (such as yahoo.com).

Of course, there are a few ways to improve your banner ad click-through rate. The most important thing is to promote banner ads from affiliate programs that fit with your web site's theme. For example, if you have a web site about hockey then banner ads promoting romance novels would not do well, but ads promoting hockey products would. However, the banner ad doesn't need to be about the same thing as your web site. It just has to work with your site's visitors. For example, if you create a site about internet marketing then Nothing But 'Net ads may do very well on your site.

Even if you target banner ads to your site's theme, click-through rates will probably still be low. There are a few reasons for this:

  1. Visitors quickly learned to ignore banner ads like most people now ignore tv commercials.

  2. Some affiliate program's banner ads are designed to reinforce the company's brand name and not the action required for you to get paid. Also, according to a recent study, more sales, site registrations, etc. may come from people who viewed an ad but did not actually click-through than from people who actually clicked on the ad. This means that your site could be attracting sales, newsletter signups, quote requests, etc., BUT YOU ARE NOT GETTING PAID FOR IT!

  3. Banner ads can make your site take a long time to load. Visitors may have come and gone before the ad even loads.

Because of this, I suggest using alternate advertising methods rather than standard banner ads.

First, there are non-standard sized banner ads (buttons, squares, tall rectangles). Currently, people do not ignore these unusual images as often as standard sized banner ads. However, as these become more popular people will probably begin ignoring them as well.

Second, there are interactive banner ads. Some Commission Junction programs offer interactive banner ads. Look at the ad below for an example of an interactive banner ad:

Notice why this would be more effective than a standard banner ad. For this ad, you get paid $1 for every unique user that signs up for their newsletter (UPDATE: This affiliate program no longer exists). This ad makes it extremely easy for site visitors to choose the celebrity they want a newsletter about and then type in their email address.

Third, there are email ads. These typically have high click-through rates. However, in order for email ads to work, you need to write a content packed newsletter or advertise your email ad in someone else's content packed newsletter. By the way, I am talking about opt-in newsletter emails, NOT SPAM! Don't forget that you still need to target your ad. You don't want to put an ad for vitamins in a celebrity newsletter. Email ads can be extremely effective because of the following:

  1. People are reading your great newsletter content and before they realize it they have read your email ad as well.

  2. Placing email ads in your newsletter contain an element of trust because subscribers choose to receive your newsletter. Adding a testimonial or personal review of the product or service to the email ad will improve your click-through rate even greater!

Fourth, there are pop up and interstitial ads. Pop up ads are ads or web sites that pop up in a separate window while interstitial ads are full motion ads similar to tv commercials. Both types can be very annoying by interrupting your visitors. The best time to use either of these ads is when you have a site that generates a large amount of new visitors who do not return. Some affiliate programs like Adult FriendFinder's Click-Thru program will pay you for just popping up their web site. If your web site has a lot of traffic then this can result in a substantial amount of income from visitors not even actually taking any actions on your web site. However, it is worth noting that pop up windows use javascript code that people with older computers may not have. I have not seen any interstitial ads offered through affiliate programs at this time. However, if these ads do become available to use with affiliate programs, I recommend only using them if you are getting paid per impression as this type of ad is normally only used to build a company's brand name.

Fifth, there are text link ads, which may be the most effective type of web site ad. Let's look at the benefits of using text link ads:

  1. Text link ads don't slow down opening a web page like banner ads do.

  2. Text link ads can be integrated to look like part of your site which makes them impossible to be tuned out the way banner ads are.

  3. It is easy to combine text link ads with a personal product recommendation or testimonial. IMPORTANT: I strongly advise against personally recommending products just because you may make some money from it. If you choose to do this, in the long run you will lose the trust of your web site visitors who will pay less attention to your personal recommendations in the future.

In conclusion, remember these key points:

  1. Target the ads to what your web site visitors are coming to your site for.

  2. Try to establish trust with your visitors as it will pay off.

  3. If possible, use personal recommendations (only if you actually like the product or service) or testimonials to promote the affiliate program.
